The theme of this book is avoidance of throwing out the baby with the bath water. We stand at the dawn of a New Aeon, an age unlike any other. It has been called “The Aeon of Horus” and rightly so. It is fitting that the title and beginning of this considerable endeavor comes from the hitherto unpublished work of C.S. Jones, better known as Frater Achad.
It is an essay which clearly attempts, beyond all reason, to reconcile the Work of Aleister Crowley, the Great Beast 666 of the Aeon of Horus and Prophet of this Aeon, with the life and work and divinity of that towering figure of the Aeon of Osiris, Jesus Christ. The core essay was so outrageous to some followers of the former that one copyist of the essay could not resist an editorial margin note that Crowley “would never have written that his Message of the Master Therion was in sweet accord with the teaching of Jesus.”
One must say, quite so. While Liber AL vel Legis is the key text of the “Crowley Canon,” his major teaching is well summarized in “The Message of the Master Therion”--which, for those not previously acquainted with it, it is suggested that you read it before you read the essay Frater Achad writes in response which follows here.
Crowley, as is evident in the occasional comments scattered throughout his writings, was far more ambiguous on the subjects of Christ and Christ Jesus than is immediately apparent to many of his followers. As a Gnostic prelate he wrote the Gnostic Mass as a ritual representing “the original pre-Christian Christianity.” While he sometimes seems to subscribe to the common Victorian intellectual view of Jesus once so fashionable - that Jesus the man was an early amalgamation of several dying-and-rising gods of the classical world - the picture is far from consistent, and the concept of Christ in the Gnostic understanding was certainly well within Crowley's complex understanding of genius in its primordial spiritual sense.
If anyone can make 'reason' a lie here, it would be Achad. The discoverer of the key to Liber Al vel Legis, the Book of the Law of the New Aeon, delivered by Crowley in April of 1904, Achad was both an advanced student of Thelema, a Master of the Temple and Chartered Grand Master of Crowley's principle spiritual Orders, but also a convert, relatively late in life, to Roman Catholicism, and author of such works as The Anatomy of the Body of God, The Egyptian Revival and other works widely admired by a readership far broader than the occult community, including many esoteric Christians.
Being a shocking attempt to reconcile the visions of enlightenment from one age into another, including a previously little-known essay by Frater Achad, some tales of the Aeon of Osiris and others of the Aeon of Horus, that the Son of Righteousness shall shine in the Mythos of the Aeon of the Crowned and Conquering Childe. Contains previously unpublished material from Frater Achad (Charles Stansfeld Jones) and T Allen Greenfield.
